In this lesson, we will explore some of the most important verb tenses in Spanish: the present tense (including its use to refer to the future) and the past tenses: the present perfect, the simple past, and the imperfect. Understanding their uses will help you communicate clearly and express the time, duration, and context of actions.
1
1. The Present
The present tense is used to:
Talk about actions happening right now.
Example: «Estoy en clase.»Describe habits, routines, or customs.
Example: «Trabajo de lunes a viernes.»State universal truths or facts.
Example: «El agua hierve a 100°C.»Give instructions, commands, or comments in actual time.
Example: «Giras a la derecha y sigues recto.»Talk about the future, especially when the time frame is clear.
Example: «Mañana tengo examen.» / «Este verano viajamos a México.»
2. Past Tenses
Spanish has different ways to express the past, but in this lesson we’ll focus on three:
a) Present Perfect (Pretérito perfecto)
Used to talk about past actions that are connected to the present or fall within a period that is still ongoing.
Example: «Hoy he estudiado mucho.»
Example: «Siempre he vivido en esta ciudad.»
b) Simple Past / Preterite (Pretérito indefinido o perfecto simple)
Indicates completed actions that happened at a specific point in the past, with no connection to the present.
Example: «Ayer estudié español.»
Example: «El año pasado viajé a Perú.»
c) Imperfect (Pretérito imperfecto)
Used to describe habitual or repeated actions, ongoing events, or actions without a definite end in the past, as well as descriptions, background information, or simultaneous actions.
Example: «Cuando era niño, jugaba en el parque.»
Example: «El sol brillaba y la gente caminaba tranquilamente.»
Practical tips:
- To choose the correct tense, consider whether the action is connected to the present or whether it is something that happened continuously in the past.
- Listen to conversations in Spanish and try to identify the verb tenses used in different contexts.
